About Close-up of a Common Loon, Canada

In summer the common loon wears a black head, a striped white necklace and a chequered black-and-white back, and its eyes turn bright red. Loons return to the same northern lake year after year, and in their first weeks the chicks often ride on their parents' backs to stay warm and safe from pike and eagles. Their calls include the wail, the yodel and a laughing tremolo, often heard at night across the lakes of Canada. The bird is so much a part of the country that it appears on the one-dollar coin, the loonie. In this photo a loon swims close to the camera on calm blue water.

Puzzle tip: start with the loon's black head, red eye and white stripes, then its chequered back, and finish with the blue water.
