About Cannon on Signal Hill, St. John's

Signal Hill guards the Narrows, the thin entrance to the harbour of St. John's in Newfoundland, and for more than two centuries cannons on its slopes defended the town. The last battle of the Seven Years' War in North America was fought here in 1762, when British troops took the hill back from the French. Today walking trails lead from the hilltop along the cliffs, past old gun batteries, down to the colourful houses of the Battery. In this photo an old cannon points over the edge of the hill toward Cabot Tower, with the harbour on the right under a cloudy sky.

Puzzle tip: begin with the dark cannon in front and the tower on the hill, then the autumn grass, and finish with the harbour and the clouds.
