About Haida Totem Poles at SGang Gwaay, Haida Gwaii

SGang Gwaay is an old Haida village on a small island at the southern end of Haida Gwaii, the islands off the north coast of British Columbia. The Haida lived here for thousands of years, and in the late 19th century the village was left after smallpox killed most of its people. Its cedar mortuary and memorial poles still stand where they were raised, and the Haida have chosen to let them slowly return to the forest rather than take them away. The site became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981, and in summer Haida Watchmen look after it. In this photo weathered grey poles stand in bright green moss among tall trees.

Puzzle tip: begin with the grey carved poles, then the bright green moss and grass, and finish with the dark trees.
