About Village on the Sepik River

The Sepik is one of the great rivers of the Pacific, flowing about 1,100 kilometres across northern New Guinea without a single dam or bridge on most of its course. For the people who live along it, the river is the main road, travelled in long dugout canoes. Sepik villages are famous for their tall spirit houses, called haus tambaran, and for their wood carvings, which are collected by museums around the world. This photo shows a thatched house on the riverbank, sheltered by huge spreading rain trees and palms.

Puzzle tip: start with the dark trunks and the small thatched house, then the green treetops and the brown river water.
