About Lion Temple of Musawwarat es-Sufra

Musawwarat es-Sufra lies in a dry valley in the desert of Sudan, about 20 kilometres north of Naqa. Its Lion Temple, built in the 3rd century BC for the god Apedemak, was carefully put back together by archaeologists in the 1960s from its fallen blocks. Nearby sprawls the Great Enclosure, a puzzling complex of walls, ramps and courtyards; some think it was a place of pilgrimage, others a centre for training elephants. This photo shows the temple's gateway and walls standing alone in the sand.

Puzzle tip: start with the temple gateway and its carved walls, then the sandy ground, and the blue sky last.
