About Third Cataract of the Nile

Between Khartoum and Egypt, the Nile flows over six cataracts, stretches where the river breaks into rapids among rocks and islands of hard granite. The Third Cataract, in northern Sudan, was a natural frontier for thousands of years: here the Kingdom of Kerma, one of the oldest kingdoms in Africa, faced the armies of Egypt, and pharaohs carved inscriptions on the rocks. Green fields and palm groves line the banks, with the desert right behind. This photo shows the river winding among rocky islands and green bushes.

Puzzle tip: start with the blue river and the rocky islands, then the green bushes in front, and the desert hills and the sky last.
