About White Nile at Malakal

Malakal, in the north of South Sudan, lies on the White Nile just below the point where it is joined by the Sobat River. Here the Nile is wide and slow, having just passed through the Sudd, one of the largest wetlands in the world. For centuries steamers and barges have carried people and goods along this stretch between Juba and Khartoum. On the banks live Shilluk and Nuer people, who fish and keep cattle. This photo shows boats along the shore and the broad river beyond.

Puzzle tip: start with the boats along the shore, then the far bank and the river, and the pale sky last.
