About Place Masséna, Nice

Place Masséna is the main square of Nice, laid out in the 19th century as the city spread beyond its old town. Its elegant buildings are painted in the red ochre typical of the region and rest on arcades that shelter shops and cafés. The square is paved in a black-and-white chequerboard pattern, and trams glide across it on their way through the city.

Puzzle tip: the chequerboard paving is fun but tricky; start with the red buildings and their arches.
