About Giant Tortoise, Galápagos

Galápagos giant tortoises can weigh more than 250 kilograms and live well over 100 years. The islands were named after them, since galápago is an old Spanish word for tortoise. When Charles Darwin visited in 1835, he learned that tortoises from different islands had different shell shapes, which helped shape his ideas about evolution.

Puzzle tip: the patterned shell and the wrinkled head are the key; the background comes last.
