About Attabad Lake, Hunza

Attabad Lake is very young: it formed in January 2010, when a huge landslide fell into the Hunza River and blocked its valley. The water rose behind the natural dam and flooded villages and part of the Karakoram Highway, which was later rerouted through new tunnels along the shore. The lake is now about 20 kilometres long, and fine rock dust carried down from the glaciers gives it a striking turquoise colour. Boats now carry visitors across the water between the steep, bare mountains.

Puzzle tip: the turquoise water stands out clearly; the steep mountain slopes are best sorted by light and shadow.
