About Bendery Fortress, Tighina

Bendery Fortress stands near the Dniester in the city also called Tighina. The fortification was enlarged under Ottoman rule in the sixteenth century and changed hands several times in later conflicts. Its surviving walls and towers remain a visible record of the area’s strategic location. The photograph shows the old stone fortification in clear daylight beneath a blue sky. After his defeat at Poltava in 1709, King Charles XII of Sweden lived for several years in a camp near Bender.

Puzzle tip: match the fortress walls and towers before filling the larger sky area.
