About Black Sand Beach near Hāna, Maui

Black sand beaches form when hot lava meets the sea and shatters into tiny pieces of dark volcanic glass, which the waves then grind and wash ashore. On the rainy east coast of Maui near Hāna, the black sand is framed by thick green forest. The best known is the beach at Waiʻānapanapa State Park, whose name means glistening fresh water, after the freshwater pools hidden in its lava caves.

Puzzle tip: the black sand and white surf form clear shapes; the green trees come last.
