About Mount St. Helens at Sunrise

Mount St. Helens is a volcano in the Cascade Range of Washington State. On 18 May 1980 an earthquake set off the largest landslide ever recorded, which tore away its northern side and released a huge sideways blast. The eruption lowered the mountain by about 400 metres, left a horseshoe-shaped crater and flattened forests over some 600 square kilometres; 57 people died. Today the area is a national volcanic monument, where scientists study how plants and animals return to land covered by ash.

Puzzle tip: the pink, sunlit side of the mountain is easy to spot; the green slopes in front come next, the sky last.
