About Blue Ridge Mountains in Autumn, North Carolina

The Blue Ridge Mountains, part of the Appalachian Mountains, roll in wave after wave across western North Carolina. Seen from afar they look blue because the trees release a natural vapour that scatters the sunlight into a soft haze. The Appalachians are among the oldest mountains on Earth, formed some 480 million years ago, and once stood as high as the Alps. The Blue Ridge Parkway, a scenic road of 755 kilometres, follows their crests and is busiest in October.

Puzzle tip: the bright red trees in front are the easiest pieces; the blue ridges behind are best sorted by shade.
