About Carved Pumpkins on Hay Bales, Ludwigsburg

Carving faces into vegetables is an old autumn custom from Ireland and Scotland, where people once used turnips to make lanterns for the night of Samhain at the end of October. Irish and Scottish emigrants took the custom to North America, where the larger, softer pumpkin soon replaced the turnip, and the jack-o'-lantern later returned to Europe with Halloween. In this picture from Ludwigsburg, carved pumpkins with funny and scary faces sit on hay bales among colourful gourds and leaves.

Puzzle tip: find the carved faces first, then fill in the hay bales and the gourds around them.
