About Djado Plateau from Above

The Djado Plateau, in the far northeast of Niger near the borders with Algeria and Libya, is one of the most remote places in the Sahara. Its sandstone cliffs and canyons hide ancient rock engravings of giraffes, rhinos and cattle, and at its foot stand the ruined fortified villages of Djado and Djaba, built of mud and stone on rocky hills around palm oases. The plateau is on Niger's tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage. This photo, taken from a mountain top, shows the rocky plateau stretching away into the desert.

Puzzle tip: start with the rocks in front, then the cliffs and canyons below, and the flat desert and the sky last.
