About Niger River at Niamey

Niamey, the capital of Niger, grew from a few villages into a city of more than a million people on the banks of the Niger River. The river, the third longest in Africa, brings life to the dry Sahel: along its banks are rice fields, vegetable gardens and fishing villages, and in the rainy season it spreads out over sandbanks and islands. Boats called pirogues carry people and goods across, and hippos still live in some quiet stretches. This photo looks over the river and its green islands, with the city in the haze beyond.

Puzzle tip: start with the green islands and the bright water, then the far bank, and the hazy sky last.
