About Elephant Mother and Calf, Dzanga Bai

Forest elephants are smaller than the elephants of the African savanna, with rounder ears and straighter tusks that point downwards, so they can move through the dense rainforest. They were recognised as a separate species only in recent years, and they are now critically endangered. At Dzanga Bai, in the Central African Republic, mothers bring their calves to drink the mineral-rich water that seeps from the ground. This photo shows a mother elephant and her calf standing together in a pool.

Puzzle tip: start with the two elephants and their wet grey skin, then their reflections, and the muddy ground and the grass last.
