About Guaita Tower, San Marino

Guaita is the oldest of the three fortress towers on Mount Titano in San Marino. Its stone walls stand above the small republic’s capital and the hills of neighbouring Italy. The tower was used for defence and remains part of the historic centre protected by UNESCO. The photograph shows the tower and crenellated walls against open hills and sky. San Marino claims to be the oldest surviving republic in the world, traditionally founded in AD 301 by a stonemason called Marinus.

Puzzle tip: build the tower top and its battlements before filling the distant hills.
