About Hallstatt in Autumn

Hallstatt is a small village squeezed between a steep mountainside and Lake Hallstatt, in the Salzkammergut region of Austria. Salt has been mined in the mountain above it for some 7,000 years, making it one of the oldest salt mines in the world, and an early Iron Age culture is named after the village. Because there is so little room, the old bone house by the church holds hundreds of painted skulls. Hallstatt and its mountains are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Puzzle tip: the church spire and the houses by the water are the key pieces; the mountains and the lake come next.
