About Mosque of Chinguetti

Chinguetti, in the Adrar region of Mauritania, grew up in the 13th century as a stop for caravans crossing the Sahara and became a famous centre of Islamic learning. Its mosque is built of dry stone without mortar, and its square minaret is crowned with ostrich eggs. Old families in the town still keep libraries of handwritten books, some of them many centuries old, while the dunes of the desert creep closer every year. Chinguetti is a UNESCO World Heritage site. This photo shows the minaret against a blue sky.

Puzzle tip: start with the stone minaret and its top, then the arches and walls, and the sand and the clouds last.
