About Rideau Canal and Château Laurier, Ottawa

The Rideau Canal runs for 202 kilometres from Ottawa to Kingston, and it is the oldest canal in North America that has worked without a break since it opened in 1832. It was built under Lieutenant-Colonel John By after the War of 1812, as a safe supply route away from the American border, and in 2007 it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Each winter the part in central Ottawa freezes into a skating rink almost eight kilometres long. In this photo the canal leads to the green copper roofs of the Château Laurier hotel, with the towers of Parliament Hill on the left.

Puzzle tip: start with the green roofs and the towers, then the trees along the banks, and finish with the water and the sky.
