About Sand Dunes near Skagen

The north of Jutland is a land of wind and sand. Near Skagen, the Råbjerg Mile is the largest moving dune in Northern Europe, drifting about 15 metres east every year. Sand blown inland has buried farms and even a church: of the old Church of Saint Lawrence, only the white tower still rises above the sand. To stop the dunes, people planted lyme grass, heather and pine forests, which still cover much of the area. In this photo pale, wind-shaped dunes stretch towards a flat green horizon under a cloudy sky.

Puzzle tip: the dark green tufts of grass on the sand help you place the dunes; the clouds are best left for last.
