About Stilt Houses on Inle Lake

Inle Lake lies at about 880 metres in the hills of Shan State, about 22 kilometres long and only a few metres deep. The Intha people who live around it build their houses on stilts over the water and travel everywhere by boat. Their fishermen are famous for rowing standing up, with one leg wrapped around the oar, which leaves their hands free for the nets. On the lake they also grow tomatoes and flowers in floating gardens made of mats of water plants, anchored with bamboo poles.

Puzzle tip: the houses and the line of the far shore are good guides; the calm water and sky are best done last.
