About Takienta Tower House, Koutammakou

Koutammakou, in the north of Togo, is the land of the Batammariba people, and since 2004 it has been a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Batammariba build takienta, small castles of mud with round towers, where the family lives on two floors and keeps grain in granaries on the roof. The houses are built by hand, often facing the setting sun, and their shapes have deep meaning in local beliefs. In this photo a takienta stands in the green hills, with a forked pole that serves as a ladder.

Puzzle tip: start with the brown mud walls and the thatched granaries, then the green hills behind, and the ground last.
