About The Colourful Old Town of Menton

Menton is the last French town on the Riviera before the Italian border, and its old town climbs a hill above the sea in tall houses painted in yellow, orange and pink. At the top stands the Basilica of Saint Michael, built in the seventeenth century in the Baroque style. Menton belonged to the princes of Monaco for centuries, declared itself a free town in 1848 and joined France in 1861. Its mild climate is perfect for citrus trees, and every February it holds a Lemon Festival with huge sculptures made of oranges and lemons. Here the old town rises above a sunny beach.

Puzzle tip: start with the bell tower and the colourful houses, then the arcades along the beach, and finish with the sea and the sky.
