About The Covered Bridges of Strasbourg

The Ponts Couverts, or Covered Bridges, guard the point where the river Ill enters the old centre of Strasbourg. They were built in the thirteenth century as part of the city walls, with wooden roofs that gave them their name, although the roofs were removed in the eighteenth century. Three of the original four square towers still stand beside them. Just upstream, the Vauban Dam, built in the seventeenth century, could flood the land south of the city to stop an enemy army. In this photo the towers and bridges are reflected in the river, with the cathedral spire in the distance.

Puzzle tip: start with the square towers and the bridges, then the trees and houses, and finish with the reflections and the grey sky.
