About Hisham’s Palace, Jericho

Hisham's Palace, or Khirbat al-Mafjar, is the ruin of a winter palace built in the 740s, under the Umayyad caliphs, on the northern edge of Jericho. It had halls, a mosque, courtyards and a large bathhouse, but an earthquake in 749 brought much of it down before it was finished. Its bathhouse floor holds one of the largest mosaics of its time, and in one room a famous mosaic shows a lion attacking a gazelle under a tree. Jericho, about 250 metres below sea level, is one of the oldest cities in the world.

Puzzle tip: the stone walls and arches are the clearest parts; the pale ground and the sky need more patience.
