About Oostpoort, Delft

The Oostpoort, or East Gate, is the only one of Delft's medieval city gates still standing. It dates from around 1400, and its two slender towers with pointed roofs were added in the early sixteenth century. A white wooden drawbridge crosses the canal beside it. Delft is famous for its blue-and-white pottery, known around the world as Delftware, and for the painter Johannes Vermeer, who was born and worked here. The town was also the home of William of Orange, the leader of the Dutch revolt against Spain, who was assassinated here in 1584.

Puzzle tip: start with the two towers and the white drawbridge; the trees and the water go together last.
