About Saint Servatius Bridge, Maastricht

Maastricht, in the far south of the Netherlands between Belgium and Germany, is one of the oldest cities in the country, founded where a Roman road crossed the River Maas. The stone Saint Servatius Bridge was built at the end of the thirteenth century to replace an older wooden one, and it is one of the oldest bridges in the Netherlands still in use. In 1992 the city gave its name to the Maastricht Treaty, which created the European Union. With its hills, stone houses and pavement cafés, the city often feels more Belgian or French than Dutch.

Puzzle tip: start with the stone arches of the bridge; the houses on the far bank come next and the wide sky is last.
