About Traditional Maneaba, Abemama

A maneaba is the meeting house at the heart of every village in Kiribati. Its huge roof, thatched with pandanus leaves, rests on low pillars, so the sides stay open to the breeze and people have to bow slightly as they walk in. Each family has its own traditional place to sit under the roof, and the elders meet here to talk, settle disputes and hold feasts and dances. Abemama, in the central Gilbert Islands, was once ruled by King Tembinok, who welcomed Robert Louis Stevenson to the atoll in 1889.

Puzzle tip: the dark roof and its straight edges are easy to build first; the grass, the path and the sky come after.
