About Palm-Lined Beach on Butaritari

Butaritari is an atoll in the north of the Gilbert Islands, the main island group of Kiribati. It gets more rain than most of the country, so it is greener than the southern islands, with breadfruit, bananas and tall coconut palms. The Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson stayed here in 1889 during his voyage through the Pacific and wrote about it in his book In the South Seas. In 1943 American troops landed on the atoll, which was then known as Makin, in one of the first battles in the Gilbert Islands.

Puzzle tip: start with the line of palms and the pale sand; the blue water and the sky are the last pieces.
