Every country has a flag, and many of them tell a story. The red and white of Poland’s flag come from its medieval coat of arms, the maple leaf has been on Canada’s flag since 1965, and Nepal’s two stacked pennants make it the only national flag that is not a rectangle. Some flags are almost twins: Chad and Romania use nearly the same blue, yellow and red stripes, and the flags of Indonesia and Monaco differ only in their shape.
Each question shows one flag and four countries to choose from. The wrong answers come from the same part of the world, so look closely at the colours, stripes and emblems. At the end you see your score and every flag you missed, so you can learn them for next time.
North America’s flags include the Stars and Stripes of the United States, with one star for each of its 50 states and 13 stripes for the first colonies, and Mexico’s eagle eating a snake on a cactus, from the Aztec legend of the founding of Tenochtitlan. The Caribbean adds some of the brightest flags in the world, from the gold cross of Jamaica to the parrot on the flag of Dominica. Greenland’s flag, raised for the first time in 1985, shows a red and white circle for the sun sinking into the sea, between white for the ice and red for the ocean.
