Mount Ararat over Yerevan
Yerevan is older than Rome: it grew around the fortress of Erebuni, founded in 782 BC, whose walls still stand on a hill at the edge of the city. The snowy double peak of Mount Ararat, 5,137 metres high, rises beyond the border and appears on the country's coat of arms. Just outside the city lie the ruins of Zvartnots, a round cathedral of the seventh century listed as a World Heritage Site.
In the city itself you can piece together the small Zoravor Church, the tiled Blue Mosque and the painted ceramic plates sold at the weekend Vernissage market.
