About Burundi
For centuries Burundi was a kingdom ruled by a mwami, or king, and the royal drums were the symbols of his power. Germany and then Belgium ruled the land, and it became independent in 1962. Burundi is one of the most densely populated countries in Africa, and most people farm on its green hills, growing coffee, tea and bananas.
You can assemble Lake Tanganyika seen from the hills of Bujumbura, fishermen on its turquoise water, palm trees on its shore, the royal drummers of Burundi and Rusizi National Park near the capital.
