Citadelle Laferrière, Haiti
The Citadelle Laferrière, built after independence on a mountaintop in the north, is the largest fortress in the Americas and a World Heritage Site. Its massive stone walls were meant to protect the new nation from any return of colonial armies.
Near the town of Jacmel in the south, Bassin Bleu is a series of deep blue pools linked by waterfalls in a mountain gorge. Along the coast, fishing boats rest on quiet beaches, and in Port-au-Prince, the capital, colourful houses climb the hillsides.
