About Slovenia
In a short drive you can travel from the peaks of the Julian Alps to underground caves, vineyards and a short stretch of Mediterranean coast. Slovenia's highest mountain, Triglav, appears on the national flag, and the country is home to brown bears and to the olm, a blind cave salamander that can live for more than a hundred years. At Lake Bled, a church stands on a tiny island and a castle looks down from a cliff.
Predjama Castle is built into the mouth of a cave halfway up a cliff, the turquoise Soča runs through the valleys where the battles of the Isonzo Front were fought, and Piran keeps the squares and bell tower of its five Venetian centuries.
