About Piran from the Air

Piran stands at the tip of a narrow peninsula on Slovenia's short Adriatic coast, only about 47 kilometres long. For five centuries, from 1283 to 1797, it belonged to the Republic of Venice, and its narrow streets, squares and bell tower still look Venetian. The tower of the Church of Saint George on the hill was modelled on the campanile of Saint Mark's in Venice. Piran grew rich from the salt pans nearby, which are still worked by hand today. In this aerial photo the red roofs of the old town fill the peninsula, with the blue sea on both sides.

Puzzle tip: the blue sea frames the town clearly; the red roofs and the church tower are the next pieces to place.
