About Shaded Lanes of Souq Waqif, Doha

Souq Waqif, in the centre of Doha, began as a market where Bedouin and townspeople traded goods beside a wadi that often flooded. Its name means "standing market", perhaps because traders stood along the banks to sell. After a fire, the souq was carefully rebuilt in the old style between 2006 and 2008. Today its narrow lanes sell spices, perfumes, textiles and handicrafts, and it has its own falcon market and even a hospital for falcons. Colourful fabric canopies like these shade some of its passages.

Puzzle tip: the bright canopy has bold stripes that are easy to match; the walls and the sky come next.
