Dubai Creek and the Old Town
Long before oil was found, Dubai was a small town of pearl divers, fishermen and traders built along Dubai Creek. Wooden water taxis called abras still carry passengers across the creek for a small fare, and the old souks sell spices, textiles and gold.
In the historic Al Fahidi district, houses are topped with wind towers, which catch the breeze and send it down into the rooms, an old way of keeping cool in the heat. Just outside the city, the desert begins, with red-gold dunes shaped by the wind.
