About Keel-billed Toucan, Costa Rica

The keel-billed toucan lives in the lowland rainforests from southern Mexico to Colombia and is often seen in Costa Rica. Its huge bill, painted green, blue, orange and red, can be a third as long as its body, yet it is light, because inside it is hollow with a honeycomb of thin bone. Toucans use it to reach fruit at the tips of branches, then toss their heads back to swallow.

Puzzle tip: the colourful bill is the easiest part; the dark feathers and the background need patience.
