About Humpback Whale Tail, Antarctica

Every southern summer, humpback whales swim thousands of kilometres from warm tropical waters to the seas around Antarctica to feed on krill, small shrimp-like animals that gather in huge swarms. Before a deep dive a humpback lifts its tail, or fluke, high out of the water. The black and white pattern on the underside of each fluke is different for every whale, so scientists use photos of tails to recognise them, like fingerprints.

Puzzle tip: the black tail is the clearest shape; the glaciers behind and the grey water are best sorted by colour.
