About Whitby Abbey above the Old Town

Whitby Abbey was founded in 657 by King Oswiu of Northumbria, with the noblewoman Hild as its first abbess. In 664 it hosted the Synod of Whitby, where church leaders agreed how to set the date of Easter. The Gothic ruins that stand on the East Cliff today are the remains of a church built in the thirteenth century. Bram Stoker is said to have found the name Dracula in a book at Whitby's library. Below the abbey, the red roofs of the old town crowd down to the harbour.

Puzzle tip: start with the abbey ruins on the skyline, then work down through the green cliff to the houses and the beach.
