About Whitby Abbey on the East Cliff

Whitby stands where the River Esk meets the North Sea, and its two cliffs face each other across the harbour. On the East Cliff the ruins of Whitby Abbey and the tower of St Mary's Church have guided sailors for centuries. Captain James Cook learned his seamanship in Whitby, and his ship Endeavour was built here as a coal carrier. In this photo, taken from across the water, the abbey and the church rise above a green slope and a row of houses along the shore.

Puzzle tip: start with the abbey and the church on the cliff top, then add the row of houses and the water.
