About Arad Fort, Muharraq

Arad Fort stands on Muharraq Island, in the north-east of Bahrain, near the shallow bay that once separated it from the main island. It was built in the 15th century, before the Portuguese arrived, in the traditional Islamic style of the region: a square of thick walls with a round tower at each corner. In the past, a moat around the walls filled with seawater at high tide. The fort was restored in the 1980s with the same materials used to build it, coral stone, lime and the trunks of palm trees.

Puzzle tip: the round towers are clear landmarks; the long sandy foreground and the sky come last.
