About Big Almaty Lake from Above

Big Almaty Lake lies at about 2,500 metres in the Ile-Alatau National Park, some 15 kilometres south of Almaty. It is fed by glacial streams, and fine rock dust from the glaciers gives the water its milky turquoise colour, which changes through the seasons. The lake supplies drinking water to the city, so swimming is not allowed. Around it rise peaks of more than 4,000 metres, often with snow even in summer, and an astronomical observatory stands on a ridge above the lake.

Puzzle tip: the turquoise water is easy to separate from the slopes; the snowy peaks and the sky come last.
