About Drowned Spruces of Lake Kaindy

Kaindy means "place of birches" in Kazakh, after the birch trees that grow in the valley below the lake, yet the trees standing in the water are spruces. The lake is about 400 metres long and up to 30 metres deep, and its water, fed by mountain springs, has a blue-green colour from the minerals in it. It lies within the Kolsai Lakes National Park. From the shore, as in this photo, the grey trunks rise straight out of the clear water in front of the forested slope.

Puzzle tip: the pale trunks make clear vertical lines; match the trees on the slope behind them by their shades.
