About Coloured Cliffs of Yangykala Canyon

Millions of years ago, much of what is now Turkmenistan lay under the waters of an ancient sea, and the Caspian Sea is what remains of it. As the water retreated, rain and wind cut deep valleys into the soft layers left on the seabed, creating the maze of gorges and flat-topped hills of Yangykala, which runs for about 25 kilometres. Fossil shells can still be found in the rock. This view looks down on a row of striped, flat-topped hills standing on the white canyon floor.

Puzzle tip: follow the coloured stripes along each hill; the white canyon floor fills in at the end.
