About Novo Brdo Fortress in the Hills

Novo Brdo Fortress stands on a hill in eastern Kosovo, above a settlement that became an important mining centre in the Middle Ages. Silver and other metals from the surrounding area drew merchants and craftspeople to the town. The remaining stone walls show the outline of a fortified upper enclosure, while the hills around it explain why this was a strong defensive site. The fortress is also known as Novobërda. In this aerial photo, pale walls contrast with the green slopes and winding road.

Puzzle tip: begin with the pale fortress walls, then separate the sunlit and shaded slopes around them.
