About Colonnade and Statues of St Peter's Square

Bernini's colonnades around St Peter's Square are made of 284 columns arranged in four rows, and from two marked points in the square the rows line up so neatly that each looks like a single column. Along the top stand 140 statues of saints, each more than three metres tall, made by Bernini's workshop over several decades. The Vatican, an independent state since 1929, covers only about 44 hectares, and the square is open to everyone. Every Sunday crowds gather here to hear the Pope speak from a window above. In this photo the white statues line the top of the colonnade against a bright blue sky.

Puzzle tip: the statues along the top are clear against the sky; the columns below repeat, so compare their shadows.
